A slew of young theatergoers and their families went on an oceanic adventure on June 17 at the FSU Center for the Performing Arts.
Asolo Repertory Theatre hosted an afternoon full of activities before and after its performance of “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea” for Asolo Family Day.
Kids enjoyed drawing and origami at the craft stations upstairs and a movement activity in the lobby about “monsters of the deep,” which was led by artist and educator Ann Morrison. Craig Francis, co-creator of “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea,” also shared some of the background and inspiration for the play before the show.
Eventogers also interacted with volunteers and staff from Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast, Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, Sarasota County Libraries and South Florida Museum to learn more about marine life. Children learned about manatees with South Florida Museum’s hands-on puppet and maze activities, and Mote’s mobile unit provided an up-close encounter with marine animal fossils and live horseshoe crabs, sea urchins, sea stars, hermit crabs and more.
Families also had the opportunity to meet members of the cast following the performance.
