The woman arrested in a murder-for-hire scheme on Thursday by the Manatee County Sheriff's Office is being identified as a Palm Aire resident.

Rachael Natalie Leahy, a 34-year-old who lives at 5104 Canterbury Drive, was arrested and charged with solicitation for premeditated murder. Leahy was listed on Thursday as living in "south Manatee County."

A report issued by Sheriff Brad Steube stated that Leahy paid an undercover Sheriff's Office detective $2,500 of the $5,000 fee to have her ex-husband, 59-year-old David Joseph Leahy, Jr., of Sarasota, killed. The Sheriff's Office derailed that plan.

The Probable Cause Affidavit described the scheme. On Aug. 22, the Sheriff's Office received information Rachael Natalie Leahy was trying to find someone to kill her husband. The next day, an undercover phone number was passed to Leahy, who called the number and told the detective she was "eagerly awaiting this."

On Aug. 25, Leahy made arrangements to meet with the detective on the 1200 block of 60th Avenue West, Bradenton.

During that meeting, according to the affidavit, she explained she wanted custody of her children and that her ex-husband needed to be "gone completely." Drowning or being caught in a fire were ways of death suggested by Leahy. She provided the undercover officer with information about her ex-husband and said, according to the affidavit, she wanted to be out of the country when it happened.

She made a payment of $1,000 on Sept. 1 and another $1,500 on Sept. 8 at the location on 60th Avenue West. On that day, according to the affidavit, she told the undercover detective she might have another job for him to do. An arrest followed.
