Students eat up summer reward at Braden River Elementary

Hayley Rio, the principal at Braden River Elementary, didn’t have a typical birthday celebration Aug. 26. Instead of eating cake, she ate pie.

About 300 kids lined up outside Braden River Elementary to redeem their prize — to throw pie at Rio and Assistant Principal Christa Francis — for working hard on their summer assignments.

Over the summer, the kids were given a handful of readings, questions and handouts they were expected to complete by the beginning of the new school year.

“Knowing they would be able to throw pie at Mrs. Rio and Mrs. Francis really motivated them to work hard,” said Jeanette Bovaird, a parent.

Bovaird’s daughter, Megan Bovaird, was oozing with excitement after she finally got her chance to throw a pie at Rio’s face.
