Lakewood Ranch Community Development District 1 supervisors hope to create an alternative memorial site for friends and family to remember Brendan Shreve and Jared Duran, teenagers who died in a vehicle crash Oct. 10.

The board on Thursday approved the installation of a bench on the west side of Lakewood Ranch Boulevard, across from the crash site, which is located in the boulevard median just north of Clubhouse Drive.

The board intends to allow the placement of flowers and other memorabilia through the holidays, but hopes the bench will serve as a replacement memorial site after that.

“We want to remain sensitive to the overall picture, but there is some concern with potential traffic hazards,” CDD 1 Chairwoman June Stroup said.
