Manatee County commissioners today denied an application by Tarmac America to rezone a four-acre parcel on 33rd Street East from light to heavy manufacturing.
The company had planned to build a concrete batch plant on the site, which is less than two miles from Kinnan Elementary School and less than 600 feet from residences.
More than 200 residents of neighboring communities turned out to protest the application.
“We’re delighted,” resident Deborah Landes said of the decision. “We are delighted with the unanimous decision and the understanding there is a change and what worked 20 years ago (doesn’t work now).”
