A 22-year-old man was arrested Jan. 14 after leading Manatee County Sheriff's Office deputies on a high-speed chase through Bradenton.

A sheriff’s office report states multiple units responded to an auto burglary-in-progress in the Barrington Ridge neighborhood at about 8:36 p.m., Friday.

The victim had attempted unsuccessfully to stop suspect Marquel V. Jovan while he was inside the victim’s car. A deputy observed Jovan leaving the scene on foot and get into a tan Mercury Grand Marquis and began pursuit.

The Marquis fled south from Barrington Ridge, continued west on 63rd Avenue East and then turned northbound on U.S. 301. Between 51st and 38th Ave. E., the pursuit reached speeds of 80 mph with light traffic, and the pursuing deputy stated he was terminating pursuit because the suspect was starting to drive recklessly, the report states.

At that time, the suspect lost control of his vehicle, driving into the center median. He stopped before re-entering the road and nearly hitting the deputy’s vehicle, the report states. The pursuit began again and the suspect reduced his speed, even stopping at traffic lights.

The suspect drove to his mother’s residence on 11th Street West, where he was apprehended without incident.
