Adam Johnson, aka “the lectern guy,” is simultaneously suing Manatee County and running for the at-large County Commission seat occupied by Jason Bearden.
Johnson received the nickname after his participation in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot in the Capitol Building and posing for a picture while holding Nancy Pelosi’s lectern.
Johnson pled guilty to entering and remaining in a restricted building and received 75 days of incarceration and a $5,000 fine. He was among those pardoned by President Donald Trump.
In March 2025, Johnson sued six out of seven Manatee County commissioners claiming corruption because they voted to not pursue $250,000 in legal fees against former commissioner Joe McClash.
McClash sued the county after the former board reduced wetland protections. Mike Rahn was the only commissioner to vote against releasing McClash of the obligation, so he is not named in the lawsuit.
Johnson filed with the Supervisor of Elections office on Jan. 6, the fifth anniversary of the riot. He is one of five Republicans listed as active candidates for the seat. Bearden is not seeking reelection.
