Boys and Girls Club celebrate mile marker

Fit2Run has helped outfit 5,000 pairs of feet with free tennis shoes over its five-year partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Sarasota County.

To celebrate that mile marker Fit2Run hosted a one-mile fun run on June 30 at the Lee Wetherington Boys and Girls Club facility.

Dozens of children lined up on at the starting line. Their pace was impressive, but only the first three finishers went home with a new pair of tennis shoes from Fit2Run. Other top finishers won a Fit2Run swag bag and a medal.

In the eyes of Fit2Run Outreach Coordinator Attiah Sturgis, all the children walked away winners. Sturgis is a Boys and Girls Club alumnus and facilitated its partnership with Fit2Run five years ago. To her, their partnership offers children with a means to learn while giving them the opportunities to stay active.

"It gives them the tools to be fit," Sturgis said.
