Manatee County Sheriff's Office deputies have arrested a 17-year-old Parrish youth who is suspected of shooting an unidentified 17-year-old male at 7 p.m. Friday in the 5900 block of Eighth Avenue Drive West, in East County, just off Upper Manatee River Road.

The unidentified male died at the scene.

The Sheriff's Office report said deputies responded shortly after 7 p.m. to a shooting with injuries. They found the victim lying in the back of the residence with a gunshot wound to the chest. Deputies performed life-saving measures until EMS arrived at the scene but the youth was pronounced dead.

The report said witnesses told detectives that multiple teens were hanging out in the backyard when the gun went off and then those in the backyard began running in multiple directions.

Detectives developed probable cause Saturday morning to arrest Carter Layne for manslaughter with a firearm. He was taken into custody at his Parrish home.

Detectives continue to process evidence. No other details are being released at this time.
