A Bradenton man has pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer during the breach of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

John Anthony Schubert III, 47, entered the plea in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, to a felony charge of assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers. The FBI arrested Schubert on Oct. 4, 2023, in Bradenton.

Sentencing is set for July 11.

According to court documents, Schubert joined his parents, John Jr., and Amy Schubert of Crest Hill, Illinois, amid a large crowd that had gathered in an area known as the “Peace Circle” in Washington, D.C.

This area was fenced off and closed to the public. However, the crowd of rioters, including the Schuberts, breached barricades in this area and made their way to the West Plaza.

Schubert joined a large group of rioters fighting law enforcement officers. According to the criminal complaint, Schubert put his left shoulder and arm on an officer and used his body weight to push that officer.

Court documents say that Schubert also attempted to punch the officer and only retreated from the fighting when he was sprayed with a chemical irritant.

Schubert then made his way inside the Capitol building by climbing through a broken window next to the Senate Wing Door. Schubert helped his parents climb through the same broken window.

The criminal complaint also quoted a text recovered from Any Schubert’s cellphone: “Johnny got clubbed and maced and john and I got maced in our mouths. A woman was shot 20 feet in front of use [sic]. We’re ok. Got a little confrontation w/ Antifa.”

The group then made their way to various locations inside the Capitol, including the Rotunda and Statuary Hall. Schubert exited the Capitol at approximately 2:43 p.m. via the East Front House Door.

Schubert’s father has entered into a plea agreement to also be charged with assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers. His mother, Amy, pleaded guilty to parading, demonstrating or picketing in a Capitol building.

Both will also be sentenced in July.
