High school football roundup: Week nine

Four area teams walked away from week nine with key wins — and four did not.

East County 

Lakewood Ranch High (3-5) won 10-8 over Gibbs High (0-7) at home. Simon Freed had a 10-yard touchdown run and senior kicker Aaron Clark hit a 33-yard field goal. The Mustangs defense kept Gibbs off the scoreboard; the Gladiators' lone touchdown came on a 40-yard interception return by senior Davion Massey. The Mustangs will next play Bayshore High (4-4) at 7 p.m. Oct. 27 at home. 

Braden River High (3-4) won 21-10 over Charlotte High (3-5) at home. Junior quarterback Lucas Despot threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Matt Schefer and a 27-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Cody Kawcak. Junior running back/wide receiver Yahshua Edwards had an eight-yard touchdown run. The Pirates will next play Southeast High (0-8) at 7 p.m. Oct. 27 at home. 

The Out-of-Door Academy (3-5) lost 35-7 to Bradenton Christian School (7-1) at home. Junior quarterback Jackson Roth threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver/running back Jack Meyers. The Thunder forced four BCS turnovers in the first half: seniors Chase Taraska and Jack Taraska each had an interception while sophomore Dylan Walker and freshman Devin Erdei each recovered a fumble. Jack Taraska also blocked a BCS punt. As of Oct. 20, the Thunder's next opponent is still to-be-determined, as it will take place in the Sunshine State Athletic Association playoffs. 

Parrish Community High (6-2) lost 41-34 to Cypress Creek High (8-0) on the road. Junior defensive back Bryson Bender had a pick six. Senior running back Jerone Turner had a five-yard rushing touchdown. Senior tight end/running back Lane Tomlinson had a one-yard rushing touchdown and caught a five-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Jackson Volz. Volz also had a three-yard rushing touchdown. The Bulls will next play Port Charlotte High (6-2) at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 27 on the road. 


Sarasota

Riverview High (4-4) won 21-14 over Manatee High (6-2) on the road. Junior running back DJ Johnson had all three Rams touchdowns, on a run of seven yards and two runs of one yard. Sophomore Jamaun Thompson and senior Olibe Laventure each had an interception. The Rams will next play Sarasota High (1-7) at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 27 at home. 

Sarasota High (1-7) won 25-6 over Southeast High (0-8) at home. Senior quarterback Johnny Squitieri threw a 10-yard touchdown to senior Jackson Mullet. Senior running back Joe Ziegler scored touchdowns on runs of three and four yards. Senior kicker Andrew Clayton hit field goals of 32 and 27 yards. The Sailors will next play Riverview High (4-4) at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 27 on the road. 

Cardinal Mooney High (6-2) lost 50-14 to Bishop Verot High (8-1) on the road. Senior running back Carson Beach had a 19-yard touchdown run. Sophomore quarterback Devin Mignery had a 39-yard rushing touchdown. The Cougars will next play SmartEn Sports Academy (0-6) at 7 p.m. Oct. 27 at home. 

Booker High (5-3) lost 30-21 to Wiregrass Ranch High (7-1) on the road. The Tornadoes returned a blocked punt for a touchdown and had one passing and one rushing touchdown each. Booker will next play Lemon Bay High (7-1) at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 27 on the road.
