High school football roundup: Week eight

As programs prepare for the regular season's final stretch, area teams head in different directions.

Sarasota

Cardinal Mooney High (6-1) won 49-6 over John Carroll Catholic (2-6) at home. Cougars senior running back Carson Beach had three touchdowns, the longest being 16 yards. Sophomore quarterback Devin Mignery accounted for four total touchdowns, three passing and one rushing. The Cougars will next play Bishop Verot High (7-1) at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 on the road. 

Riverview High (3-4) lost 35-33 to Clearwater Academy International (3-4). The Rams led 33-14 in the fourth quarter before CAI's comeback, losing because of a CAI touchdown pass on the game's final play. The Rams had two goal line touchdown runs from junior running back DJ Johnson. Senior quarterback Braxton Thomas threw a 34-yard touchdown to junior Jaden Wheeler and ran for a 56-yard touchdown. The Rams will next play Manatee High (6-1) at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 on the road. 

Booker High (5-2) won 40-0 over DeSoto County High (0-7). Booker junior quarterback Jordan Johnson connected with senior Omarion Patterson for two touchdowns of 30 and 36 yards. Senior Ahmad Hunter, junior Rashawn Peterson and senior Hunter Zirkle all ran for a touchdown. The game was ended in the second quarter because of gunshots fired near the stadium, in the 1400 block of 32nd street. The Sarasota Police Department said that there were no injuries or property damage caused by the incident and that there was no threat to the public. Booker will next play Wiregrass Ranch High (6-1) at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 20 on the road. 

Sarasota High (0-7) lost 44-14 to Venice High (5-2) on the road. Sailors senior quarterback Johnny Squitieri threw an 80-yard touchdown to senior Frank Crawford and a seven-yard touchdown to senior Chris Espinel. The Sailors will next play Southeast High (0-7) at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 on the road. 


East County

Parrish Community High (6-1) won 35-28 against Braden River High (2-4) at home. Bulls junior defensive back Bryson Bender returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown in the final minute to give his team the win. Bulls senior quarterback Jackson Volz threw a 70-yard touchdown to senior Lane Tomlinson and a 33-yard touchdown to sophomore Kymistrii Young. Pirates junior quarterback Lucas Despot threw an 80-yard touchdown to senior Isaac Heaven. Pirates junior Marcus Galloway ran for a 30-yard touchdown and junior Yahshua Edwards ran for a 25-yard touchdown. The Bulls will next play Cypress Creek High () at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 on the road while the Pirates will next play Charlotte High (3-4) at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 at home. 

Lakewood Ranch High (2-5) lost 30-14 to Palmetto High (4-2) at home. Junior running back Cullen McRae had a 66-yard touchdown run and senior running back Simon Freed had a 27-yard touchdown run. The Mustangs will next play Gibbs High (0-6) at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 at home. 

The Out-of-Door Academy (3-4) lost 26-20 to Cocoa Beach High (2-5) on the road in overtime. ODA had two rushing touchdowns and a pick-six in the loss. A blocked punt returned for a touchdown allowed Cocoa Beach to tie the game in the fourth quarter. The Thunder will next play Bradenton Christian (5-1) at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 at home.
