Smell of gas prompts evacuation of Main Street building

No injuries reported in Monday morning incident.

Police and fire teams investigated a gas-odor report at 1900 Main St. this morning, prompting a precautionary evacuation of the building, authorities said.

Fire trucks and police were stationed on Main Street and a block to the south on Ringling Boulevard following the 8:01 a.m. report. 

Crews began leaving about 40 minutes later.

According to Sarasota County Fire Department, the smell of gas was reported and contained to a stove area. Sarasota Police said a burner was left on inside the building, and 911 was called as a precaution.

No injuries were reported.

Fire crews used a large ventilation fan on the ground floor of the building at one point in the operation.
