In the wake of the mass shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, the organizers of the Harvey Milk Festival have planned a candlelight vigil at Five Points Park in downtown Sarasota to memorialize the victims.

The event is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m., according to a Facebook listing. Already, more than 1,000 people have indicated they plan to attend the memorial.

"We are asking that you come down to show support for others that are still waiting to hear from family members and friends who were targeted at Pulse, and to honor the lives that were taken from our community," the event listing states.

Sarasota resident Edward Sotomayor Jr. was one of the first victims the city of Orlando identified following the attack at Pulse, a gay nightclub. The incident is the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

The city of Sarasota has encouraged attendees to carpool to the event. Parking is available at the Palm Avenue garage, State Street garage and the second and third floors of the Whole Foods garage.
