A dump truck driver traveling southbound on the interstate overturned his truck near mile marker 209, just south of Fruitville Road, at approximately 8:26 a.m. The vehicle caught fire, but the driver was able to get out of the vehicle safely, said FHP Trooper Ken Watson. There were no injuries and no other vehicles were involved.

According to the FHP press release, the truck driver, 55-year-old Edilberto Armas Caceres of Sarasota, was traveling in the center lane  attempted to change to the right lane, but almost collided with another vehicle passing on the right. Armas attempted to shift back to the center, but overcorrected and lost control of the truck, which then overturned and spilled its cargo in the right lane and shoulder.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection was on scene to check for any environmental hazards, but Watson said he believes the truck was carrying dirt, and nothing toxic.

Florida Department of Transportation will also visit the scene to check the interstate for any damage.

The accident caused major congestion this morning, closing two lanes of southbound I-75 and the ramp onto the interstate from Fruitville Road. Emergency vehicles also used a lane of northbound I-75. All northbound lanes are open again; the on-ramp is open; and one right lane remains closed southbound near mile marker 209.
