Sarasota fugitive poses on social media before capture

Manatee County deputies today arrested the fugitive responsible for the lockdown of several Sarasota schools Wednesday.

The fugitive responsible for a lockdown of parts of downtown Sarasota Wednesday, posed in pictures on social media after eluding the Sarasota Police Department.

Less than 48 hours later, the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force and Manatee County deputies apprehended 21-year-old Demetrius Downer within their county. According to a news release, he was arrested without incident.

Sarasota police locked down Sarasota School of Arts and Sciences and Sarasota Military Academy, and closed several streets in the Rosemary District earlier this week, when Downer was spotted near the intersection of 12th Avenue and Florida Avenue. Downer escaped from officers with one handcuff attached.

Downer is being held on armed robbery and escape charges.
