One dead in Colonial Oaks blast

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office and State Fire Marshal are investigating an explosion and fire that resulted in at least one fatality Thursday.

An explosion and fire rocked the Colonial Oaks neighborhood Thursday, resulting in at least on fatality, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

The State Fire Marshal, the Sarasota County Fire Department and the Sheriff’s Office are currently investigating a blaze that occurred at 2141 Cork Oak Street. Emergency personnel arrived on the scene after 9:20 p.m.

According to property records, Erick Szakacs has owned the three-bedroom, two-bathroom home since 2002. Cork Oak Street is located northeast of the intersection of Honore Avenue and Webber Street.

Authorities have confirmed that one individual died following the blast, but have not released any further details as the investigation continues.
