The Sarasota Police Department closed North Tamiami Traill for several hours Saturday, after a collision resulted in the death of 70-year-old bicyclist James Stephens.

An unnamed driver, who detectives have not identified due to an ongoing investigation, struck Stephens at the intersection of 16th Street and the North Trail after 7 p.m., according to an SPD news release. There is not a crosswalk at the intersection.

Also on Saturday, a car accident disabled the traffic lights at the intersection of Gulfstream Avenue and North Tamiami Trail. Sarasota police officers were forced to direct traffic until city staff were able to repair the control box later that afternoon.
