Arts group showcases members' work at show

EAST COUNTY — In the corporate world, Raul Casas spent his days crunching numbers as the treasurer for an international nonprofit organization.

He traveled to Asia extensively, and as he entered restaurants and homes, he noticed wood-and-paper lanterns.

“I always liked them,” Casas said.

In 2006, Casas decided to make one as a way to relax.

“I went to a hobby store and got some wood, and went into an art store and got some paper and patched together a lamp,” Casas said.

Casas now has perfected his technique. He sold the lanterns at art shows, but now sells the, primarily online.

This weekend, his work will be featured in the Creative Arts Association of Lakewood Ranch’s annual fall art show and sale. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 15, at Lakewood Ranch Town Hall, 8175 Lakewood Ranch Blvd., Lakewood Ranch.

Participating artists will showcase one-of-a-kind art in a variety of mediums, including watercolor, jewelry, pottery, ceramic and wood, among others.

Casas, who joined the organization after moving to the area is 2009, says the association’s event offers high-quality work in an interactive environment.

“It’s a good outlet for the community,” Casas said, noting last year’s event drew about 500 visitors. “It’s more personal than other shows.”
