The Manatee County Commission approved the future construction of a seven-story residential building on Lakewood Main Street behind Lakewood Ranch Cinemas this afternoon.

Homes by Towne plans to build three condominium buildings with up to 80 units in three buildings.

Former plans for the building in the University Lakes Development of Regional Impact showed four, five-level condominium buildings for the site.

Approximately 40 Lakewood Ranch residents attended the public hearing.

About 40 residents turned out to make public comments and many of them opposed the height increase to the project.

Several residents pointed out the highest building on Main Street right now is three stories.

Commissioners voted 5-0 for the change. Commissioners Robin DiSabatino and Michael Gallen were absent from the meeting.
