STOLEN STATUES
3:22 p.m. — 500 block of Chipping Lane. Larceny From Residence. A woman reported that a 4-foot bronze statue of an egret standing on a turtle and a bronze sculpture of a bed of rocks that acted as a fountain were taken from her patio while she and her husband were out of town. The woman said that she took everything from outside her residence inside but forgot about the statues.

IN NEED OF A REFILL
7:01 p.m. — 600 block of Buttonwood Drive. Field Investigation. A caller reported that a man was sleeping inside his pickup truck. The man said that he parked in the spot because he was low on fuel. His girlfriend was en route to bring him fuel.

MADE TO STICK
2:30 p.m. — 1900 block of GMD. Property Damage. A man and woman told police that workers accidentally sprayed their vehicles with adhesive. Police observed a light dusting of saw dust and small specs of a hard substance that could be removed by rubbing. The company owner told police that his workers were using an adhesive that could have blown onto the vehicles and agreed to pay to have it removed.

BLOCK SHOPPERS
7:18 p.m. — 500 block of Emerald Harbor Drive.
Suspicious Circumstance. A woman reported that a neighbor noticed a black car stopped at her home and two people exited the vehicle and walked around her home, apparently looking at the front door. Police arrived on scene and found no signs of forced entries. Neighbors described the subjects as a white female with a tattoo on her leg and a white male with a husky build and either short hair or no hair. Police located the couple, who said that they were looking at the home, which is listed as a foreclosure. The caller told police that she was in the process of purchasing the home.

No news is good news
Cops Corner is on the light side this week, reflecting the sluggish pace of Longboat Key during the final days of August.

But no news is good news, and that’s what Acting Longboat Key Police Chief Pete Cumming reported in an email to Town Manager Dave Bullock last week: During the weekend and Monday, as Tropical Storm Isaac threatened the area, there were no reports of burglaries or thefts.

Police increased patrols to prepare for the storm, which, aside from a few scattered showers, passed over the island.

In late June during Tropical Storm Debby, a string of thefts occurred in the Longbeach Village, mostly involving unlocked vehicles and homes.
