Zwiwwel closes its doors

Zwiwwel, a fine-dining restaurant featuring traditional German cuisine that opened a little more than a month ago at the corner of North Palm Avenue and U.S. 41 in downtown Sarasota, has closed its doors.

One reader told the Sarasota Observer that when he and his party of six went to the restaurant Wednesday for a birthday reservation, the restaurant was locked and the gate was padlocked.

Other patrons who tried to visit the restaurant before a play Wednesday evening at Florida Studio Theatre also discovered the restaurant was closed.

The Sarasota Observer was unable to reach the restaurant’s owners for comment. The restaurant’s website, www.zwiwwel.com, is also shut down and now contains  a short message stating “the website isn’t available due to debt.”
