OBITUARY: Mary Lee Lyons

Mary Lee Lyons, 82, of Longboat Key, died April 27.

Born Jan. 13, 1929, in Huntington, W.Va., she graduated in 1947 from Virginia Intermont School for Girls and in 1951 from Florida Southern College, in Lakeland, where she was a member and president of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She married her husband, Clayton Lyons, in 1952, and moved to Lakeland. She was a homemaker and served as president of the Women’s Club and was active with the Camp Fire Girls, Polk Museum of Art and Florida Southern Alumni Association.

As a resident of Longboat Key, Mrs. Lyons served as team leader volunteer at the Historic Asolo Theater at the Ringling Museum. She enjoyed fishing, boating and walking. She was an avid needle-pointer and loved stone crabs.

Mrs. Lyons was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Clayton. She is survived by her sons, Thomas and Richard, both of Lakeland; daughter, Jane McConnell, of Pittsburgh; and two grandchildren.

A funeral service took place Monday, May 2, in Lakeland. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Clayton and Mary Lee Lyons Athletic Conference Room, Florida Southern College, 111 Lake Hollingsworth Drive, Lakeland, Fla., 33801 or the Historic Asolo Theater at the Ringling Museum, 5401 Bayshore Drive, Sarasota, Fla., 34243.
