+ Virginia Sanders writes song about Longboat Key
Longboat Key resident and Longboat Observer “Turtle Watch” columnist Virginia Sanders wanted to pay tribute to her barrier-island home, so she wrote this song to be sung to the tune of “Home, Home on the Range”:

Home, home on the beach
Where the birds and the turtles all play
Where often is heard
A discouraging word
And more sand disappears every day!
Home, home on the bay
Where the dolphins and manatees play
Where commissioners take sides
As town and Key Club collide
And the Island-siders sing loudly, “No way!”
Home, home on the Gulf
As the oil slick spreads wider for days!
Insurance costs are so tough
We holler loudly, “Enough!”
It’s like swimming with sharks and stingrays!
