Signs of a federal beautification grant are sprouting on the southern end of Longboat Key. Approximately two weeks ago, contractors began planting new trees and shrubs as part of the landscaping portion of a $500,000 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant the town received last year for Gulf of Mexico Drive.

According to Public Works Director Juan Florensa, the trees that are being planted are resistant to salt spray. Work will continue and expand onto the north end of the Key over the next month.

New signs, which are currently being made, will also be installed over the next month as part of the project.

The updated signage will include two new “Welcome to Longboat Key” signs, along with improved wayfinding signs.
