David Beliles, chairman of The Observer Group Inc., celebrated his 80th birthday with family and friends May 1. The Kentucky native was fêted at a Kentucky Derby party, at which the birthday boy and guests enjoyed mint juleps and a Southern spread. And before viewing the 136th Kentucky Derby, partiers engaged in some old-fashioned betting with some newfangled currency — “Dave dollars”— in $80 denominations. Then, after blowing out the candles on his Derby pie, Beliles hit the dance floor for the rest of the evening. In addition to celebrating his birthday that week, Beliles and his wife, Ruth, moved from their Longboat Key home of 15 years to Plymouth Harbor.
