The Zoning Board of Adjustment denied a request today from CVS that would have allowed the chain to place a second 32-square-foot wall sign at its new Longboat Key store.

CVS sought a variance from the town’s sign code, listing the site’s lack of visibility as the result of surrounding trees and shrubbery in its application.

Patricia Ortiz, of West Central Florida Permits, spoke on behalf of CVS, and said that the site is difficult to locate from Gulf of Mexico Drive.

Town staff, however, wrote in a report that departures from the sign code have rarely been allowed and did not find sufficient evidence for the variance.

The old CVS store remains open as construction of the new store continues. The new CVS is scheduled to open in September, and the old store will be demolished in October.
