THURSDAY, MAY 12

Rahn Hortman

Since moving to Tampa, Rahn Hortman has captured local audiences with his brand of clean humor. He's performed at the South Beach Comedy Festival and on Nickelodeon's "NickMom Night Out;" now he brings his laid-back act to Sarasota. 

 

Harvey Milk Festival: Live Art

The annual Harvey Milk Festival is known for its musical showcase, but it also brings other forms of art to downtown Sarasota. This year, kick off the festivities with a performance installation by artist Belaxis Buil, called "High Resolution Paradise." Inspired by waves, tropical shorelines and other elements of paradises, the colorful show combines choreography and fashion.

 

Harvey Milk Festival: Opening Night After Party

10 p.m. at Florida Studio Theatre, 1241 N. Palm Ave.

Celebrate the seventh year of this art festival with live music and theatrical excerpts. The night will include performances by Eduardo Correa, Jamie Z and Octavio Campos. 

 

FRIDAY, MAY 13

Harvey Milk Festival: Theatre

7 to 10 p.m. at Florida Studio Theatre, 1241 N. Palm Ave.

$15 to $50

This year marks the first time the Harvey Milk Festival has incorporated theater into its programming. Miami-based artist Octavio Campos presents "America's Next President," an intimate production adapted specifically for the festival to honor the life of Harvey Milk.

 

Josh Blue

After performing on Comedy Central, "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," "Live with Regis and Kelly" and "Comics Unleashed," Josh Blue brings his self-deprecating humor to McCurdy's through May 15. 

 

SATURDAY, MAY 14

Harvey Milk Festival: Music

2:30 p.m. to 12 a.m. at Five Points Park, 1551 1st St.

Close out the annual three-day arts and music festival with a 10-band concert in Five Points Park. The lineup will include AVAN LAVA, PWR BTTM, Krisp, TOMBOi, AMFMS, MillionYoung, Bluejay, Someday River, Physical Plant and Sam Robertson. 

 

Photo Exhibit and Fundraiser

6 to 9 p.m. at These Quiet Sounds, 6508 Superior Ave.

This show will feature photo prints from Europe in support of Team Tony, a local organization that provides support for cancer patients, survivors and caregivers. Enjoy art, music and drinks; all proceeds go to Team Tony. 

 

Outdoor Pops: 'Triple Play'

Take me out to the ... orchestra? This third-annual outdoor pops concert by the Sarasota Orchestra combines jazz, rock ’n’ roll and Broadway tunes with the lively outdoor setting of Ed Smith Stadium. Enjoy your pops concert with a side of peanuts and Cracker Jacks. 

 

Rev. Billy C. Wirtz and Ronny Elliott

8 p.m. at the Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center, 525 Kumquat Court

Join these musicians for a night of comedy and talent. Reverend Billy C. Wirtz is a comic, pianist and musicologist while Ronny Elliott is a guitarist of a more somber tone. 

 

SUNDAY, MAY 15

Community Festival: Center for Asian Art

10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ringling, 5401 Bay Shore Road

Free with regular admission: $25 for adults, $23 for seniors, $5 for students and children younger than 17, $10 for active military and free for members and children younger than 6.

The Ringling celebrates the grand opening of its Center for Asian Art in the Dr. Helga Wall-Apelt Gallery of Asian Art with a community festival highlighting Asian art and culture through music, dance performances, martial arts workshops, Asian inspired art activities, family-friendly scavenger hunts, ikebana demonstrations, a kimono display, tea sampling and more.   

 

MONDAY, MAY 16

Ringling by the Bay 

5 to 8 p.m. at The Ringling, 5401 Bay Shore Road

This evening includes live music, dancing and food on the Ringling's Bolger Campiello overlooking the water. The Lisa Ridings Band will perform throughout the evening with high-energy rock, blues and soul.

 

TUESDAY, MAY 17

'James and the Giant Peach'

7 p.m. at Venice Theatre Mainstage, 140 Tampa Ave. W.

$18 for adults; $13 for college students; $10 for children

Relive this classic Roald Dahl children's tale, performed as a musical at the Venice Theatre. Plays until May 22. 

 

WEDNESDAY, MAY 18

Carl Rimi

A favorite of McCurdy's Comedy Club, Carl Rimi will entertain Sarasota with his quick-fire observational humor. Runs through May 22.
