Smokey's Session at The Blue Rooster

Smokey’s Session, a new seven-piece band based in Sarasota, performs classic R&B and dance music from the likes of Joe Cocker, Delbert McClinton, Tower of Power and Tom Jones.

 

The Players New Play Festival

The Players Centre for Performing Arts hosts a stage reading of the winners of this local playwriting contest. Five winners were chosen, and they will be read, one per night, through July 1. One winner will be chosen out of these five; this play will be produced next summer.

 

FRIDAY, JULY 1

Boats On Main Block Party

6 to 11 p.m. in downtown Sarasota on Main St.

Part of the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix Festival, this block party features live music, power boats on display and other festivities on Main Street.

 

Music on Main

6 to 9 p.m. on Main St. in Lakewood Ranch, 8131 Lakewood Main St.

The popular Lakewood Ranch concert series continues on the first Friday of every month. As always, food vendors, beer trucks, sponsor booths and kids’ rides and activities will line Main Street. This month’s band is the Tropical Avenue Band, which performs R&B, top 40, island and Latin music. Proceeds benefit the Manatee-Sarasota Sierra Club.

 

First Friday Gulf Gate

Local businesses in Gulf Gate host this event on the first Friday of the month. Businesses stay open extended hours, and some offer special deals or food and drink samples. There will also be live entertainment.

 

SATURDAY, JULY 2

Fourth of July Barbecue Dinner

6 p.m. at The Showfolks of Sarasota, 5204 Lockwood Ridge Road

$12 for members; $17 non-members

The Showfolks of Sarasota hosts a barbecue dinner, prepared by Jack Dean and Company, celebrating Independence Day. Legendary trapeze artist Tony Steele is the guest of honor at the dinner.

 

Red White And Brew - Full Pint Tour

Celebrate the Fourth with Brew Thru SRQ’s tour of five local breweries on the Siesta Trolley. Each stop features tours and beer education, as well as a pint of craft beer. Stops include World of Beer, Calusa Brewing, Big Top Brewing Co., JDubs Brewing Co. and Mandeville Beer Garden.

Calusa Brewing hosts a summer concert, featuring performances from three live bands, food trucks and desserts. Celebrate the Fourth of July a day early with this afternoon event. Live music starts at 6 p.m.

 

HD at the Opera House: Petipa's "The Sleeping Beauty"

1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Sarasota Opera House, 61 N. Pineapple Ave.

The Sarasota Opera House shows The Royal Ballet in London performing Petipa’s classic opera based on the “Sleeping Beauty” story. Music for the opera was written by Tchaikovsky. The program lasts two hours and 55 minutes, with two intermissions.

 

Black Diamond Burlesque's Peep Show Deluxe

Black Diamond Burlesque presents its Peep Show Deluxe revue. All tips and a portion of the door revenue will benefit the Pulse Employee Recovery Fund to help those who recenly lost loved ones in Orlando. For ages 21 and older.

TUESDAY, JULY 5

'Dry Land'

“Dry Land,” a play by Ruby Rae Spiegel, makes its regional premiere at Urbanite. Set in a high school girls’ locker room, it portrays an unlikely friendship between two teenage girls. The play tackles tough topics, such as female sexuality, eating disorders, suicide, bullying and reproductive rights and depicts the incredible pressure of contemporary teenage life. Runs through July 24.

 

WEDNESDAY, JULY 6

The World Series of Comedy

7 p.m. at McCurdy's Comedy Theatre, 1923 Ringling Blvd.

From July 6-9, 40 professional comedians from across the U.S. and Canada will perform at McCurdy’s as part of the traveling World Series of Comedy contest. Audience members will be able to vote during the show, helping to pick the winners who will go to Las Vegas for the main event.
