Longboat Key’s new Building Official, Darin Cushing, will begin work with the town on Friday.

The new hire comes after the resignation of Building Official Wayne Thorne Aug 21. Thorne had been with the department since 2012, and prior to his resignation, the town posted a job listing for a code administrator/building official at a salary between $64,417 and $87,256.

About a week later, they found their guy.

Cushing, of Palmetto, comes to the Key after employment with the City of Bradenton, Manatee County, and several other private sector contractors. He also teaches subjects related to building at Manatee Technical Institute and also State College of Florida.

The town’s building official is responsible for management and administrative work in the town’s Planning Zoning and Building Department.
