The town of Longboat Key will receive $1.5 million in state funding for a Longboat Pass dredging project that will bring 239,000 cubic yards of sand to the north end of the island later this summer.

Governor Rick Scott signed off on the state budget line item Tuesday and the money will be used to offset the cost of an estimated $3.5 million  dredging project.

Mayor Jack Duncan sent an email to the governor's office  this week thanking him for including the funding in the state budget.

Commissioners sent emails to Town Manager Dave Bullock Tuesday, expressing relief and excitement that the funding made Scott's budget cuts.

Bullock said the town can still apply for funding for a New Pass dredging beach project during next year’s Legislature session.
