Siesta Fiesta attracts creative types to Siesta Village

Siesta Fiesta returns to Siesta Key Village for its 36th year Saturday, April 26 and Sunday, April 27.

For two days, art enthusiasts can explore work by artists from Sarasota and around the country. Artists will showcase work in a variety of sizes and mediums, from paintings to ceramics, photography and more.

The art festival, which Siesta Key merchants Lorry Eible, of Foxy Lady, and Louise Chappel, of Rainforest, started as a sidewalk art show, attracts art enthusiasts from around the world.

The low-key show first started in 1972 with 12 local artists as a way to raise money for beautification and awareness of the sleepy beach village. By the late ’70s, the number of artists more than doubled, and the art show took over Ocean Boulevard.

Since then, Siesta Fiesta has become a destination for families and individuals interested in art and fun activities. This year’s festival will feature 250 artists and craftsmen as well as live music and a green market with exotic plants, home goods and gourmet items.

“It’s not your normal art show,” says event coordinator Howard Alan. “Siesta Fiesta is an institution. It’s fun whether you’re young or old.”

Ocean Boulevard will be closed to vehicular traffic from Canal Road to Beach Road during the festival.
