Sarasota Crew
The Sarasota Crew captured the overall team title at the USRowing Southeast Junior District Championships May 10 and May 11, at Nathan Benderson Park.

The Crew’s men’s varsity 8+ and women’s varsity 8+ both posted first-place finishes. The Crew’s lightweight varsity 8+ team finished second.

With their top-three finishes, the Crew will advance to the USRowing Youth National Championships, which begin June 13, in California.

The men’s varsity 8+ will attempt to defend its national title from a season ago.

+ Area players named to all-star team
Riverview High’s Alissa Jackson and Sarasota High’s Clarissa Lynch both were named to the 25th annual Florida Athletic Coaches Association All-Star Softball Classic.

Jackson and Lynch both will play for the West All-Stars. The West will play the East May 16, at Forest High School in Ocala. The consolation and championship games will be played May 17.

+ Registration for i9 basketball underway
Registration for the i9 Sports Manatee/Sarasota summer basketball league is now underway.

The league is open to children ages 5 to 12. Games will be held Saturdays from June 14 through Aug. 2, at Faith Lutheran Church, 7750 Beneva Road, Sarasota.

+ Blazers fall in region semis
The Sarasota Christian baseball team saw its season come to an end with an 8-5 loss to Seacrest Country Day in the Class 2A-Region 3 semifinals May 6.

Holding a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning, Seacrest Country Day scored six runs on a pair of errors to extend its lead.

Sarasota Christian attempted to rally back in the bottom of the seventh inning when Joey Shamp hit an RBI single. Josh Yoder was hit by a pitch, which walked in a run and cut Seacrest Country Day’s lead in half. Adam Martin reached base on a fielder’s choice, scoring Ryan Wenger, but that was as close as the Blazers would come.

+ Rams to hold golf tourney
The Riverview High football team will hold its 8th annual Golf Tournament May 17, at Heritage Oaks Golf Club.

Registration begins at 7 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Cost is $125 per person and includes breakfast and lunch, beverages, round of golf and a certificate for a future round of golf for four at Heritage Oaks. Sponsorships ranging from $100 to $3,000 also are available.

In addition to golf, participants will enjoy contests, including closest to the hole, longest drive, putting and hole-in-one, awards, a raffle and silent auction.

Proceeds from the event will go toward the purchase of new football equipment.
