+ Sharapova shines at Italian Open, readies for French Open
Hideaway Bay resident and former No. 1 tennis player Maria Sharapova clinched a victory at the Italian Open May 15 beating Australian Sam Stosur 6-2, 6-4 for the title. Sharapova was seeded seventh in the tournament and beat Stosur in one hour and 23 minutes. Sharapova, a three-time Grand Slam champion, had to quickly turned around to gear up for the French Open, which began play Sunday. On Tuesday, Sharapova, seeded No. 7 in the tournament, beat Croatia’s Mirjana Lucic 6-3, 6-0 in 56 minutes. If Sharapova wins the French Open, it would complete her career Grand Slam.
