+ Celebrate Learning
Students at Southside Elementary will participate in the school’s annual Celebrate Learning Day Thursday, March 28. The theme of this year’s PTO-sponsored event is “Native Sarasota.”
Children will rotate through six different activity zones through the day, including presentations and animal showings from Mote Marine Aquarium and Sarasota Jungle Gardens. Spanish Pointe actors dressed as Bertha Palmer and John and Mable Ringling will teach children about Sarasota’s prominent figures and history; representatives from Brown’s Grove will teach children about the importance of citrus to the region; and Florida Studio Theatre actors will teach children a dance that incorporates Sarasota’s history.
Miss Florida will make an appearance, and Nancy’s BBQ and Square 1 Burgers and Bar donated food for the event.
+ Student run city
Sarasota Christian School fifth-graders visited BizTown in February, to see what it is like to run a city. BizTown is a miniature city created by Junior Achievement, an economic education organization.
Students held jobs as television news anchors, medical professionals, loan officers and retail sales professionals. They participated in job interviews; applied for business loans; received paychecks; and learned about philanthropic efforts and giving back to the community.
+ Dragonfly Café
Booker Middle School Visual and Performing Arts creative writing students will turn their classroom into a coffee house at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 28, to share their poetry with the public. Students aptly named their coffee house the Dragonfly Café, after their nickname, “Dragonfly Poets.” Students will read their poetry to parents, staff and the public. Admission is free and donations will be accepted.
+ Thesis work on display
Seniors in Riverview High School’s International Baccalaureate program will display their work through Friday, April 19, at the Riverview Performing Arts Center. The pieces on display feature the final thesis projects of 30 senior IB candidates. The students have spent two years completing the projects.
