Coming Home
Cardinal Mooney alumnus Eric Buchanan, class of ’00, will hold a fundraiser meeting open to the community Tuesday, Jan. 21, at the school. Buchanan has cystic fibrosis and recently learned he needs a double-lung transplant.

Buchanan is seeking help with organizing a golf tournament and coming up with ideas for smaller fundraising events. People can donate money, time or services to help the Sarasota native.

“It’s very humbling,” says Buchanan of the support he’s received from the community. “I’m honored.”

Every dollar raised at the events will go to the National Foundation for Transplants on Buchanan’s behalf and will support his surgery and post-surgery care.

The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. at Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School, 4171 Fruitville Road.

All that Jazz
The Jazz Club of Sarasota will host its fifth annual High School Jazz Festival Friday, Jan. 24, at Riverview High School. The festival is a non-competitive showcase of musicians from Booker High, Manatee High, Riverview High, Sarasota High and Southeast High.

“If you’re wondering about the future of jazz, the answer is right here at this festival,” says festival coordinator and Jazz Club of Sarasota board member Gordon Garrett.

The Jazz Cruise and Jazz Club of Sarasota are sponsors of the event.

Planning Ahead
Sarasota public schools will host student-parent information nights (SPIN) now through April. The nights are designed to help eighth-grade students and parents select a high school. Families will learn what area schools have to offer in terms of magnet programs, special-interest academics, career and technical education and extracurricular activities.
