Sarasota Police headquarters evacuated due to suspicious package

Roughly 200 people were evacuated from the Sarasota Police Department headquarters and an adjacent building after an officer found a suspicious package Monday.

A Sarasota Police officer found a suspicious package near the department's headquarters this morning, forcing the evacuation of roughly 200 people.

A bomb-disposal robot made contact with the package and SPD the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office K9 unit assisted during the incident, according to the department's Twitter account.

The scene near the building at 2099 Adams Lane was cleared before 12 p.m., and the evacuation was lifted. Officers discovered computer equipment within the package, and detectives are continuing to investigate the incident.
