A Sarasota family’s trip to a Bee Ridge Road shooting range ended in tragedy Sunday, after a father shot his son in an apparent accidental discharge incident.

William C. Brumby, 64, was attempting to swipe a spent shell casing off his back using the hand in which he was holding a handgun, during which the gun fired and struck his 14-year-old son, according to a news release from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

Emergency personnel transported the teenager to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries.

Brumby’s 24-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter were also present during the shooting.

Deputies spoke with witnesses and reviewed video footage from the range, which is located at 4583 Bee Ridge Road, and are still investigating the incident. There are currently no charges pending against Brumby.
