Residents see unlikely sighting

A few weeks ago, Longboat Key residents Bob and Shannon Gault spotted what appeared to be an American saltwater crocodile swimming in the Sarasota Bay near their home. About 5:30 p.m., the animal was seen eyeing two small white herons sitting on the sea wall, then it meandered north toward Bay Isles.
“We have never seen this in 15 years on the water here,” Gault said.
