Discussion of Whitney Beach Plaza could reach new heights tonight.

That’s because the Longboat Key Town Commission will discuss, on second reading and public hearing, an ordinance adopting proposed changes to the town’s Comprehensive Plan during tonight’s regular meeting. Last month, the commission directed town staff to delete all references to Whitney Beach Plaza, which would have allowed for an overlay district and the flexibility to build up to 55 feet.

The commission voted to remove the language after hearing concerns from Longbeach Village residents, who were concerned about the potential for a 55-foot structure. Plaza owners Brian Kenney and Richard Juliani have said that they wouldn’t build up to 55 feet but need flexibility to develop the property.

If the amendments move forward as drafted, the plaza would be limited to the height permitted by its current zoning designation of three stories, or a maximum of 40 feet.

Also at tonight’s meeting, the commission will:

Issue:
• A proclamation designating June as Flood and Hurricane Awareness Month;

Consider for formal action:
 • The cancellation of the commission’s July and August regular workshops and August regular meeting;

• The renewal of Dr. Steven Newman’s contract for Longboat Key Fire Rescue’s emergency medical services;

• A resolution giving the town manager authority to expend funds and take emergency action during hurricane season in the event that a quorum of commissioners is not available;

• A resolution authorizing the town manager to process letters of support for countywide Justice Assistance Grants;

• A resolution authorizing a $60,000 budget transfer to fund studies for the general employee and police officer pension plans;

• A resolution that reallocates funds according to a revised Infrastructure Surtax Project list. The revision reflects the $7,765,000 the town expects to receive through 2024, down from the $12,529,000 originally forecasted for the town in 2009 from the 1% Sarasota County sales tax.

Consider on first reading:
• An ordinance changing town codes to reflect recent changes to Florida Statutes that exempt real-estate associates and broker associates from obtaining a business-tax receipt;

• Two ordinances providing for a referendum to change the densities of properties located at 5440 Gulf of Mexico Drive and 521 Broadway;

Consider on first reading and public hearing:
 • Proposed changes to the town’s zoning code that were recommended last month by the Planning & Zoning Board;

The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. tonight, at Longboat Key Town Hall, 501 Bay Isles Road. Check back at YourObserver.com for updates.
