Savor the Sounds

What: The first Savor the Sounds event will feature a Dixieland Jazz concert in a picnic setting. Bring your own food and drinks or purchase pre-ordered box dinners from Harry’s Continental Kitchens. The evening will end with fireworks. Cost is $5; VIP tables can be purchased for $25 a person. Call 383-2466.

'There’s No Business Like Shul Business: A Cantor’s Cabaret' — Takes place at 7 p.m. at Temple Emanu-El, 151 McIntosh Road, Sarasota. The Bay Area Cantorial Association’s 13th annual concert will celebrate Jewish life with musical solos and ensembles covering an international range or writers, eras, styles, languages, genres and cultures. Jazz Sunday — Takes place at 10 a.m. at Longboat Island Chapel, 6200 Gulf of Mexico Drive. Al Hixon and other well-known local jazz artists will perform in this service presided over by the Rev. Vincent Carroll. Call 383-6491.

'Songs from the Heart — The Many Facets of Love' — Takes place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Longboat Key Education Center, 5370 Gulf of Mexico Drive, Suite 212. Metropolitan Opera baritone Jason Stearns and Lee Dougherty Ross, artistic director and co-founder of Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota, will perform a special Valentine’s Day program. Sandpipers Men’s Group — Meets at noon at All Angels by the Sea, Episcopal Church, 563 Bay Isles Road. Guest speaker Michael Jernigan, an injured veteran and founder of Paws for Patriots, will speak. The speech will begin at 12:30 p.m. Call 383-8161 to reserve lunch.

‘The Presidents: Who Were the Best and Who Were the Worst?’ — Takes place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Longboat Key Education Center, 5370 Gulf of Mexico Drive, Suite 212. Republican Club of Longboat Key — Meets at 5:30 p.m. at the Longboat Key Club John Ringling Room, 220 Sands Point Road. “Fabric Collage” — Takes place from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 1 through Feb. 22. Students of all levels will learn how to use fabric as a basis for creating finished artworks. Bring a variety of fabrics and sharp fabric scissors. Other materials will be provided for $10 per person. Cost for the four classes is $125 for members; $130 for nonmembers.

Wonderful Wednesdays Book Sales — Take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Gently used books will be discounted by 50%. Paperbacks will be 25 cents, and hardback books will be 50 cents to $2.50. Call 383-2011.
