Georgia pups are getting a second chance after being taken in by Nate’s Honor Animal Rescue.

Thirty-eight animals will arrive at Nate’s today after being confiscated from a hoarding case in Georgia.

A total of 72 dogs were forcibly taken form Jerry McLeod, 78, of Brooks County, Georgia, who is being charged with a myriad of counts, including cruelty to animals, failure to comply with rabies vaccinations and keeping sick and diseased animals.

According to a press release from Nate’s, the animals were found housed in an abandoned church in Georgia. The floor of the building was covered in urine and feces, and rescue workers had to use breathing apparatuses to get the animals out.

Because of a lack of food, other dogs had to eat the weaker ones.

“They were in deplorable conditions,” said Dr. Beckey Malphus, a vet from Thomasville, Ga., that responded to the rescue. “None of the dogs were spayed or neutered. Multiple dogs were houses in enclosures with no food or water and little ventilation.”

The 72 animals were taken to the local shelter, Thomasville-Thomas County Humane Society, which was already operating over capacity. It reached out to Nate’s and another Georgia shelter, both of which agreed to take the dogs.

“We are very fortunate to have an enormous volunteer base whose dedication and hard work enables us to assist in these types of cases,” said Executive Director Dari Oglesby.
