Plans by The Concession Golf Club to install a helistop near its clubhouse are creating a buzz in Panther Ridge and neighboring communities.

Residents garnered more than 12,000 signatures, of which only 1,200 are from Florida, in an online petition opposing the project.

Manatee County commissioners will hear the proposal at their June 2 land-use meeting.

“We believe there are several legal issues that should prevent the commission from approving this plan,” said Panther Ridge resident Daniela Drillman, petition organizer. “We will be bringing them all forth at the meeting.”

Residents say the roar of helicopters will ruin their quiet way of life and spook horses, causing a safety problem for their riders in the equestrian Panther Ridge neighborhood, among other concerns.

Concession attorney Ed Vogler said Concession officials are evaluating input and are respectful of residents’ concerns, but they are moving forward.

“We believe that the proposed helistop facility is in compliance with county ordinance and we’re proceeding to obtain approvals of all the regulatory bodies,” Vogler said. “The first approval is Manatee County. Then, later, the FFA and the FDOT.

“We’re respectful of the concerns and all will be addressed at public hearing,” he said.

The Florida Department of Transportation issued a cease and desist order May 12 stating “the club must cease all air operations until it has complied with all relevant statutes and regulations.” Vogler said he received the letter May 18.

“We’ve asked our members and instructed them not to land their private helicopters on the site until full authorizations are secure,” he said.
