An analysis of FCAT results shows most grades in the majority of Sarasota schools beat the state average in reading, math, writing and science.
Pine View School had the best performance, with 100% of its students meeting the testing requirements in third, fourth, fifth and seventh grades.
Although Pine View did see several declines from 2008, such as in fifth-grade science, the score in that area was still higher than any other school in the district, dropping from 100% to 95%.
Bay Haven and Phillippi Shores elementary schools improved their scores from last year in each grade.
Emma E. Booker Elementary increased its scores in third and fourth grades, but it was below the state average in all subjects for all grades.
It was a similar story at Alta Vista Elementary. Scores increased in third and fourth grades, but the school was below the state average in third-grade math, fourth-grade math and fifth-grade math, reading and science.
Booker Middle School’s combined sixth-grade scores were up nearly 18% over last year, but both reading and math scores were below the state average. Booker Middle’s seventh- and eighth-grade scores were also below the state average in all subjects.
For 10th grade, Pine View, Sarasota Military Academy and Lakewood Ranch in East County were the only schools to outperform the state average in all subjects.
Booker and Sarasota high schools fell below the state average in all subjects. Riverview underperformed in writing only. And, Booker High School and Sarasota Military were the only schools to show improvement in 10th-grade scores from last year.
In East County, more than half of schools scored lower on the FCAT than last year in fifth-, eighth- and 10th-grade levels. However, most of those schools still outperformed the state average.
Eight of 15 schools performed worse than they did on the 2008 FCAT, with Myakka City Elementary dropping the most at 31.3%. Two of three middle schools and both high schools declined from last year.
Tara Elementary showed the greatest year-over-year gain at 18.4%.
Nine of 15 East County schools scored higher than the state average in all subjects. Five schools fell below the state average in one subject. Only Myakka City Elementary scored below the state average in two subjects. In the chart below, East County schools are designated by (EC).
