A venue that hosted rowing competitions, 5k runs, dragon boat races and a slew of other competitions in 2014, Nathan Benderson Park is accustomed to the spotlight.

In just one year, Benderson Park attracted more than 50,000 spectators for a range of outdoor events that impacted the local economy by $12 million, officials said.

Now, it's being recognized on a state scale.

Last week in Fort Lauderdale, the East County facility received more recognition when it earned the Venue of the Year award from the Florida Sports Commission.

"We are proud to have not only a world-class rowing facility, but also another beautiful neighborhood park here in our community," said Carolyn Brown, Sarasota County's  Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources director.

Looking ahead, the park will also host the 2015 U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships next month and the 2017 World Rowing Championships, among other noteworthy events.
