Town attorney David Persson has recommended David Bullock, deputy Sarasota County administrator, for interim town manager.

“I have a candidate that meets the qualifications that you outlined: extensive experience in governmental management and organizations, aware of and a participant in local and state issues, an activist manager rather than a passive one, and from outside the Town’s organization,” Persson wrote in a letter sent to the Longboat Key Town Commission today.

Bullock began his career with Sarasota County in 1994 as solid waste director, a position he held for three years until becoming deputy county administrator in 1997.

In his letter, Persson recommends that commissioners vote at tonight’s special meeting to add an item to the agenda to discuss and consider the interim town manager selection.

Longboat Key Police Chief Al Hogle began serving as acting town manager last Monday, when the commission accepted the resignation of 14-year Town Manager Bruce St. Denis. At last Monday’s meeting, the commission reached consensus to move forward with a three-phase approach to selecting a new town manager, with an acting manager serving for one or two weeks until the appointment of an interim manager, who will serve for six to eight months as the town launches a national search for a permanent replacement.
