5:13 p.m. – 500 block of Bay Isles Parkway
Welfare Check: A grocery store employee reported that a man carrying a black duffle bag had been hanging around for approximately two hours. The man said he arrived early for a job interview and was only passing time.

FEB. 24

FIRED OR FRAUD?
10:47 a.m. – 3800 block of GMD
Contractor fraud: A woman told police she paid a contractor $40,000 in December, but he didn’t complete the work he was hired to do and stopped responding to communications from her in January. Police told her he can’t be prosecuted under criminal contractor fraud charges because the woman’s attorney sent a letter notifying the contractor he was fired. She told police she plans to pursue a civil case against him.

WHAT HAPPENS ON LONGBOAT STAYS ON LONGBOAT
10:27 p.m. – 2100 block of GMD
Property found: An officer saw a man retrieve a purse from the roadway that contained a bottle of perfume, smashed cellphone with the letters ZTE on it, pink toothbrush, leopard print bra and gray tank top. There was no identifying information in the purse.

CREDIT SPREE
2:03 p.m. – 2100 block of GMD
Identity theft: A man reported that someone applied for three different bank credit cards using his identity. The cards were issued and, although no charges were made, a balance transfer was requested with one of the cards. The victim canceled all cards and notified his bank.

VIGILANTE JUSTICE
8:04 a.m. – 5800 block of GMD
Traffic/Reckless driving: A man taking his kids to school confronted another man because of speeding. After a verbal confrontation, the first man followed the alleged speeder to Emerald Harbor, where officers made contact with the two men and advised the first of the dangers of confronting people.

HARD OVER
Boat – Off the Key
Boat: A marine patrol officer found a 20-foot sailboat that appeared to have dragged its anchor and been left on a sandbar. He left a message for the owner and will continue to monitor the vessel.

DRINKING, DOGS ON THE BEACH
3:41 p.m. – 3100 block of GMD
Dog on beach: An officer responded to a complaint of a dog on the beach and alcohol being consumed – not by the dog. The owner removed the dog, and the officer saw no alcohol being consumed.

PERMISSION SLIP
1:09 p.m. – 800 block of Broadway
Public service: A man reported that people were launching paddleboards on the private property. One of them produced a note he said was from the new owner of the property, but was leaving anyway.

BIKE FOUND
5:50 p.m. – 4000 block of GMD
Property found: An officer found an older, girl’s purple bike that had been left at Bayfront Park, she was told, for approximately five days.

MARCH 1

DOWN THE PIPES
7:06 p.m. – 7000 block of Longboat Dr. North
Contractor fraud: A woman reported that a man tried to get her to write a check to “cash” for a leak in her roof, of which she was unaware. There was water coming from the air-conditioning return inside, which the man showed her. The victim believes the man, who said he was on her roof, poured water down a vent pipe to cause the apparent leak. She had written a check, but called her bank afterward to stop payment.

DOCKING MANEUVERS
3:06 p.m. – Linley Street
Property damage: A man staying on the key called to report that his kayaks, secured by cable to the dock at Linley Street, had been dragged to the area of his parked car and damaged. The man reported that, earlier, he had an incident with a man over his keeping his kayaks locked to the dock.

REAR WINDOW
10:31 a.m. – 700 block of Spanish Drive South
Suspicious circumstance: A man reported the back window of his SUV had been smashed sometime during the night or morning.
