Contractor dies after Longboat Key accident

A 50-year-old construction worker fell three stories from the Beachwalk condominiums Thursday.

An unnamed man fell from a Longboat Key condominium complex yesterday, and died after reaching Blake Medical Hospital.

The 50-year-old construction worker was climbing scaffolding next to the Beachwalk on the north end of the Key at around 8:45 a.m., and fell backwards three stories after grabbed an unsecured handle, according to Longboat Key Police Chief Pete Cumming.

“He was unconscious when we arrived,” Cumming said.

The man, who police are not naming until authorities notify his next of kin, died at Blake Medical center following emergency surgery at 2 p.m. Thursday.
