Commission to discuss beach project, Village parking

Two topics that directly affect north-end residents are on the agenda for the Longboat Key Town Commission’s regular workshop scheduled for 1 p.m. today at Longboat Key Town Hall: an emergency beach project and parking in the Longbeach Village.

Town staff will make a presentation to the commission about the upcoming West Coast Inland Navigation District (WCIND) sand placement project that will include placing between 66,000 and 88,000 cubic yards of sand on the north end’s beach. The project will cost approximately $1 million; WCIND has agreed to contribute $500,000 with the town making up the remaining cost.

The commission will also hear suggestions from Village residents for alleviating parking problems in the neighborhood.

A group of residents submitted a list of problems and options to the town with the recommendation that the town identify problem streets and blocks and restrict parking on selective blocks.

Also at Monday’s workshop, the commission will:

• Recognize Longboat Key Police Sgt. Randy Thompson as Police Officer of the Year;

• Hear a presentation from town staff about established provisions for addressing buildings deemed to be a nuisance;

• Discuss a proposed ordinance that would place final site plan authority with the Longboat Key Planning and Zoning Board;

• Hear a presentation about the town’s plan to replace the existing forcemain that conveys wastewater to the Manatee County wastewater treatment facility.
