Out-of-Door Academy seventh-grader Maria Ross defeated Cardinal Mooney’s Taylor Lederman 6-4, 6-4 to capture the No. 1 girls singles final of the Class 1A-District 9 tournament April 2-3. The 12-year-old then teamed up with eighth-grader M’Balia Bangoura to capture the No. 1 doubles title. Here is an inside look at this week’s Athlete of the Week.

What was your reaction when you won your singles and doubles titles?
I was extremely happy, because I knew I helped my team in some way. It felt really good to be able to do that.

Do you prefer singles or doubles?
Singles. Sometimes, when you’re playing doubles and you don’t do very well, then the other person depends on you. In singles, you’re on your own. It’s just you out there, and you’re not putting anyone else out there in jeopardy.

How long have you been playing tennis?
Since I was about 5 years old. My mom was a tennis player, and she was a coach.

What do you enjoy the most about tennis?
I like the competitiveness and going around to tournaments. I have a lot of friends in Miami, so when I get to see them at tournaments, it’s a lot of fun.

Do you know what you want to be when you grow up?
A doctor. I just like helping people, and I’ve always liked the idea of being a doctor and helping people.

Do you have any siblings?
I have a brother, Ivan, who is 20 years old.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Australia. I hear it’s a really nice place, and the people are really nice. I know people who have played there, plus the Australian Open is there, and I have heard it’s a really great atmosphere.

Do you play any other sports?
I run track.

What is your favorite dessert?
Chocolate lava cake

If you could play another sport for a day, what would it be?
Soccer. A lot of my friends do it, and it’s a big team sport. It just seems really fun.
